Reflection on the TTELT’s Podcast Episode S2 41.0: “Increase Student Talk Time”


In this week's blog post, I had the opportunity to listen to a podcast episode by TTELT (Teaching Tips for English Language Teachers) titled "Increase Student Talk Time" with guest speaker Courtney Miles. As an English language fellow, Courtney shared valuable strategies and tips on how to encourage students to open up and share their experiences in the classroom. 




In this blog reflection, I will discuss the usefulness of the episode, the key learnings I gained, the effectiveness of the episode's title, and how I envision applying these tips in a real classroom setting.


The Usefulness of the Episode

The podcast episode proved to be highly useful as it shed light on an essential aspect of teaching: increasing student talk time. Courtney's insights and experiences helped me realize the significance of utilizing the initial minutes of class more effectively. 


By diversifying the questions we ask students during this time, we can encourage them to engage in meaningful discussions and share their thoughts and experiences with one another. Courtney's emphasis on creating an environment where there is no right or wrong answer was particularly insightful, as it promotes student confidence and active participation.


Key Learnings

From the episode, I learned the importance of incorporating open-ended questions and deeper inquiries into class discussions. Instead of repeatedly asking basic questions like "How was your weekend?" or "What did you do today?", we should encourage students to think critically and express their opinions on topics relevant to the lesson. 


By doing so, we not only increase student talk time but also promote vocabulary development, critical thinking, and cultural awareness. Furthermore, the idea of using interactive games, such as "Two Truths and a Lie," was intriguing as it encourages students to share unique aspects of themselves, promotes deeper connections, and allows for the introduction of vocabulary related to the lesson's theme.


Effectiveness of the Episode Title

The episode's title, "Increase Student Talk Time," was indeed interesting enough to capture my attention. As a teacher, one of my ongoing goals is to foster active participation and create an engaging classroom environment.

I will also incorporate interactive games, such as "Two Truths and a Lie," to encourage students to share unique aspects of themselves and foster connections within the class.


Furthermore, I recognize the importance of adapting these strategies to fit the specific dynamics of my classroom. Considering factors like class duration and student age, I will carefully plan when and how to implement these techniques. 


By making student talk time a regular and expected part of the classroom routine, I hope to cultivate a sense of confidence and enthusiasm among my students.

Decide and Design (Stages of Preparing a Multimedia Project)


Welcome, dear readers, to the captivating world of multimedia projects! In this fast-paced digital era, where technology intertwines with creativity, multimedia projects have become an integral part of our lives. From engaging presentations to captivating videos, multimedia offers an endless canvas for expression. 


Today, we shall embark on a journey to uncover the secrets behind the Decide and Design stages of preparing a multimedia project, where imagination meets organization and creativity dances with structure. How does this apply to teaching?


Well, creating and presenting multimedia projects is an essential skill for students to master. The DDD-E Model is a well-known approach for managing your student projects.  



Before we embark on the journey of Decide and Design, let's take a moment to appreciate the wonders of multimedia. Gone are the days when textbooks were the sole source of knowledge. 


In today's digital age, multimedia opens up a treasure trove of possibilities. From videos and audio recordings to interactive presentations and online collaborations, multimedia offers a wealth of opportunities to engage and motivate our students.


The Decide Stage:


Our journey begins with the Decide stage, where we carefully select the multimedia project's purpose, content, and format. As English language teachers, we have the privilege of choosing from an array of options that suit our students' needs and learning objectives.


Purpose

First and foremost, we must define the purpose of our multimedia project. Do we aim to enhance listening skills, promote creativity, or improve oral fluency? Clarity of purpose ensures that our project aligns with the desired learning outcomes.


Content

The content selection process is like curating a gallery. We need to handpick materials that are relevant, engaging, and age-appropriate. Whether it's authentic videos, catchy songs, or thought-provoking articles, the content we choose will determine the success of our project.


Format 

Next, we must decide on the format that best suits our project. Will it be a video, podcast, digital presentation, or even a collaborative online platform? The choice of format depends on factors such as students' preferences, available resources, and technological feasibility.


The Design Stage:


Once we have made our decisions in the Decide stage, it's time to roll up our sleeves and bring our multimedia project to life in the Design stage. This is where we explore the creative possibilities and transform our ideas into reality.


Storyboarding

Before diving into production, it's essential to storyboard our project. A storyboard acts as a blueprint, helping us organize our thoughts, structure the content, and anticipate the final outcome. We can use online tools or good old-fashioned pen and paper to sketch our vision.


Scripting and Sourcing 

Writing a script allows us to ensure coherence, clarity, and flow in our multimedia project. Whether it's dialogues, voiceovers, or captions, a well-written script acts as a guiding star throughout the production process. Additionally, we can source supplementary materials, such as images, music, or visual effects, to enhance the overall impact.


Production and Editing

Armed with our storyboard, script, and sourced materials, we can now produce our multimedia project. This involves recording audio, capturing video, editing visuals, and integrating all elements into a cohesive whole. Tools like video editing software, audio recording devices, and graphic design platforms become our trusty companions during this stage.


Assessment and Reflection

Lastly, we must not forget the importance of assessing our students' learning and reflecting on the effectiveness of our multimedia project. Surveys, quizzes, peer evaluations, and personal reflections provide valuable insights into the impact of our efforts and pave the way for future improvements.


Final Thoughts


Armed with creativity, pedagogical insights, and technological prowess, English language teachers can create immersive learning experiences that ignite curiosity and foster language development.
